An industrial gym with a contemporary edge.

This 10,000+ square foot Cleveland gym was designed with a minimalist tone, pulling from the building’s industrial construction and the Rust Belt city’s material palette of concrete, steel, leather, and wood. Bare concrete and cinderblock walls are layered with steel decor and custom neon signage, which glow all hours of the day and lend to the gym’s street presence. Some large expanses of drywall geometric abstract murals by artist Lauren Pearce, adding levels of softness and texture to the industrial space. The original design scheme included an extensive neon design suspended from the ceiling, based on the lines and patterns on a gymnasium floor (below.)

Using a mixture of neon, spot, and cove lighting, there are several distinct zones of light and dark, expansion and compression, and communal and personal, to cater to different types of gym-goer and their various activities. The locker rooms and steam rooms were designed to be dark and secluded, offering visitors a sense of privacy.
